Free sample: Surf the urge to scroll

1 min 28 · A short practice for the moment your thumb reaches for the phone.

The sample is voiced by an AI copy of its maker's voice, made the same way Owntrance would make yours. Don't listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention.

Most self-help audio is a stranger's voice telling you who to be. Owntrance writes a session around what you want, then reads it back to you in the voice you know best: your own.

How it works

Three steps, then practice.

Owntrance does the writing and the reading. Your part is the listening.

Tell it what you want to change

Sleep, calm, focus, confidence, or a habit you'd like to break. Your answers shape a script built from techniques with research behind them: slow exhale breathing, if-then plans, and rehearsing the steps rather than only the outcome.

Record about 15 seconds

First a spoken consent, then a short passage to read. Owntrance makes a private AI copy of your voice that can only read your own sessions.

Listen, most days

Headphones on, eyes closed. The research points to one thing above all: regular practice, most days for a few weeks. Say how each session went and the next one adapts.

The evidence

Honest about what works.

Hypnosis is a well-studied tool, and it isn't magic. Here's what the research supports, where it's thinner, and how that shapes every script.

49

meta-analyses, covering 261 trials, in a 2024 overview of what hypnosis helps with.

Rosendahl, Alldredge & Haddenhorst (2024), Frontiers in Psychology
94

studies behind if-then plans, which made people more likely to follow through on their goals.

Gollwitzer & Sheeran (2006), Advances in Experimental Social Psychology
~80%

more deep sleep after a hypnotic "sleep deeper" suggestion, in people who respond well to hypnosis.

Cordi, Schlarb & Rasch (2014), Sleep

These are findings from published research on the techniques Owntrance uses, not results measured on Owntrance itself.

Good evidence

  • Pain, IBS and medical proceduresClear benefits for chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, painful procedures and childbirth.Rosendahl et al. (2024)
  • Slow exhale breathingFive minutes a day of cyclic sighing improved mood more than mindfulness meditation in a randomised trial.Balban et al. (2023), Cell Reports Medicine
  • Naming the obstacle, planning the responseMental contrasting with if-then plans helped people reach goals across 21 studies and about 16,000 people.Wang, Wang & Gai (2021), Frontiers in Psychology
  • Self-compassionModerate effects on stress, anxiety, depression and self-criticism across 27 randomised trials.Ferrari et al. (2019), Mindfulness

Thinner evidence

  • Habits like smoking and weightHypnosis studies here are sparse, mostly because there are too few trials rather than proof it doesn't work. We say so.Rosendahl et al. (2024)
  • NLPOnly 18% of 33 empirical studies supported its claims. A few NLP techniques stay only as vivid imagery, never as the explanation.Witkowski (2010), Polish Psychological Bulletin
  • Binaural beatsTheir effects on brain states are inconsistent, so they're offered as a pleasant background with no claims attached.
  • Everyone responds differentlySome people respond to hypnosis more than others. It's also a skill that grows with practice, so every session teaches you how to respond.Gorassini & Spanos (1986)

Your voice, your rules

Built to be trusted with your voice.

Cloning a voice is personal. These are the rules Owntrance is built on.

Consent comes first

Nothing is recorded until you agree, and the first thing you record is a spoken consent. Owntrance only clones a voice with its owner's permission.

Only your sessions

Your voice copy can only read your own sessions. Nobody else can choose it, including us.

Safe by design

Every session ends with a clear wake-up. You stay aware and in control, and it never tries to recover memories.

Not a replacement for care

Owntrance is self-help, not medical advice or therapy. If you're struggling, please talk to a professional. Don't listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention.

Who's behind it

I built Owntrance on one idea: a suggestion in your own voice can feel like your own thought.

I'm one person, building this in the open on a single laptop. That's why there's a waitlist: every full session is rendered on one graphics card, one at a time. Every script is built from published research, and where the evidence is thin, I'll say so.

The voice in the sample is mine, or rather an AI copy of it, made the same way Owntrance would make yours. If something here helps you, I'd genuinely like to hear about it.

Questions

Answered plainly.

The things people ask first about hypnosis, their voice and what this costs.

Is this real hypnosis? Will I lose control?

Hypnosis is a state of focused, absorbed attention, a bit like being lost in a good book. You stay aware the whole time, you can stop whenever you like, and every session ends with a clear wake-up. You won't do anything you don't want to.

Why my own voice?

It's the idea the app is built on: a suggestion in your own voice can feel like your own thought. Research on self-talk shows the way you speak to yourself matters; talking to yourself by name or as "you" helped people handle stress (Kross et al., 2014). Whether your own voice works better than a stranger's for hypnosis hasn't been tested directly, so we call it an idea, not a proven fact.

What happens to my voice recording?

It's used to make one AI copy of your voice, and that copy can only read your own sessions. Nobody else can select it. Before anything is recorded, you agree to a consent statement.

Is it medical treatment?

No. Owntrance is self-help, not medical advice, diagnosis or therapy. It can sit alongside care from a professional, but it doesn't replace it. If phone or social media use is seriously harming your life, please talk to a professional.

When can I use it, and what will it cost?

Owntrance is in early testing and opens to people on the waitlist a few at a time. The Unscroll videos and the sample on this page are free. Pricing for full sessions hasn't been set yet; people on the waitlist will hear first.
